David N. Silvers

Dr. David Silvers received his Bachelor’s Degree from Haverford College and his MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1968.  He was then an intern in Medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and subsequently did his residency training at the Skin and Cancer Unit of the New York University Medical Center, which he completed in 1971.  During his Dermatology Residency from 1971-1973, he served as a Major in the United States Army.  Dr Silvers was assigned to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington DC, where he was a staff physician and the supervisor of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory of the Skin and Gastrointestinal Branch of the Institute. 


Dr. Silvers was certified by the American Board of Dermatology in 1973.  In 1974, he was certified by the American Boards of Dermatology and Pathology with special competence in Dermatopathology.  In 1978, Dr. Silvers became the Director of the Dermatopathology Laboratory of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and Associate Professor of Dermatology and Pathology.  He was promoted to Clinical Professor of Dermatology and Pathology in 1991.


At the time Dr. Silvers assumed the leadership, the laboratory was processing 4,000 specimens annually.  The Dermatopathology Laboratory now processes over 125,000 specimens that are submitted by physicians practicing at the Columbia-Presbyterian campus as well as in surrounding communities.  Dr. Silvers plays a major role in teaching medical students and residents in the Department of Dermatology, as well as the Department of Pathology.  His professional activities include frequent consultation on medical-legal matters.  He has published over one hundred articles in peer-reviewed journals.  He is a member of numerous professional societies in addition to his membership in The New York Dermatologic Society.
