Jerry Shapiro

Dr. Shapiro is one of the most experienced hair dermatologists in the world and has specialized in hair disorders for the past 34 years. Dr. Shapiro received his medical degree from McGill University in 1981, and did his residency training at the University of British Columbia. Since 2015, he is a Professor of Dermatology at the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine. 


Professor Shapiro's three main professional goals are patient care, research and education. Dr. Shapiro is the founder of the first comprehensive integrated medical and surgical hair research and treatment center in the world, and established the University of British Columbia Hair Research and Treatment Center in 1986. His major clinical and research interests include basic science hair biology, alopecia areata, cicatricial alopecia, androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and all other forms of hair loss as well as hypertrichosis/hirsutism and primary scalp skin disorders. He has trained thirty one international dermatology hair fellows from four continents. He joined NYU in 2007 as an adjunct professor and became full time professor in 2015 at NYU.


Dr. Shapiro has worked as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team of immunologists and basic researchers for more than 30 years,  Dr. Shapiro has generated over 2 million dollars to support Hair Research for many years in Vancouver and New York City, and has published many of the most influential papers in hair biology and basic science, particular in the area of alopecia areata, cicatricial alopecia, and androgenetic alopecia.. He has also pioneered several groundbreaking new treatments for hair disorders, and has served as principal investigator on many investigator initiated and industry sponsored clinical trials.  


He served as President of the World Congress of Dermatology in Vancouver in 2015. He has been on the Board of the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) affiliated with the WHO for 8 years from 2011-2019. He was President of the World Congress of Hair in 2007 in Vancouver and President of the American Hair Research Society from 2004-2007. He has served on the Board of patient advocacy groups such as Alopecia Areata (National Alopecia Areata Foundation) and Cicatricial Alopecia: Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation (CARF)


Dr. Shapiro has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, including a review in the New England Journal of Medicine, 40 book chapters, and four books in three languages including Russian and Portuguese.  He has lectured internationally on hair-related topics on more than 500 occasions on 6 continents. He is a sought after speaker and has appeared in national and international radio and television, and has been quoted in media outlets such as USA Today, ABC News, Men's Health, Oprah Magazine, Dr. Oz, and Scientific American. Patients with scalp disorders come from worldwide to consult with him at his hair clinic in New York City at NYU.


He has been a member of the New York Dermatological Society since 2018
