Nicholas A. Soter

Dr. Soter is a tenured professor in the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine.  He is an attending physician and the Chief of the Dermatology Service at Tisch Hospital as well as the Medical Director of the Skin and Cancer Unit at NYU Langone Health.


Dr. Soter received his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1965.  He was a medical intern at  Boston City Hospital 1965 to 1966, a dermatology resident at Baylor College of Medicine 1966 to 1968, a dermatology resident at  Massachusetts General Hospital 1969 to 1968.  After serving in the United States Army 1969 to 1971, he was a research fellow in immunology at Harvard Medical School 1971 to 1973.  He joined the faculty of the Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School in 1973 and rose to associate professor.  In 1983, he became a professor of dermatology at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine.  Over the years his research has focused on mast cell biology, on inflammatory mediators in dermatologic disorders, and on the pathophysiology and treatment of urticaria and angioedema, cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis, mastocytosis, photosensitivity disorders, immunobullous diseases, and pruritus.


Dr. Soter is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Society for Investigative Dermatology, Atlantic Dermatological Society, Dermatology Foundation,  American Association of Immunologists,  American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, American Dermatological Association, Dermatologic Society of greater New York, Association of Professors of Dermatology, New York Academy of Medicine, and New York State Society of Dermatology.  He is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and in Dermatological Immunology/Diagnostic and Laboratory Immunology.  His clinical practice is focused on complex medical dermatology, especially chronic urticarial and angioedema and immunobullous diseases.  He has published 184 papers and 104 book chapters.
